Exciting things have been brewing here at Jack’s Abby, including a brand new outrageously hoppy lager – Excess IPL.
The craft beer world has seen hoppier and hoppier brews popping up one after another for years now. If you’ve visited our taproom in Framingham recently, you may have noticed that we’ve released some of our already hoppy India Pale Lagers with extra dry hop additions, resulting in bolder hop aromatics and flavors. These beers have been a major hit and to celebrate hop-mania we’ve undertaken the task of brewing the ultimate hoppy beer. Taking advantage of some of the most exciting hops in our portfolio, added in startling quantities throughout the process, Excess IPL is sure to satisfy even your strongest hop craving.
Excess IPL combines two special early brewhouse hop addition techniques with heavy dry hopping to maximize hop aroma and ensure a unique fusion of multiple hop flavors. First we added whole leaf Calypso to the mash tun, a process called ‘mash hopping’, then added even more hops to the kettle than we normally do. These early hop additions remain in the mash and kettle for extended periods of time, yielding enticingly floral notes.
Additional hops are next introduced both in the whirlpool and hopback before the heftiest additions late in the process, the dry hop charges. During fermentation, Excess IPL is hopped several times over with our proprietary dry hopping system. These late hop additions preserve more of the volatile hop oils responsible for the intense aromatics and flavors in our hoppy lagers.
These repeated additions throughout the brew and fermentation processes carefully layer and blend aromatic profiles, packing Excess IPL to the brim with intense hop goodness. It’s the next best thing to a mouthful of hops!
